Chapter 18

Thirty Minutes Earlier

Xander hurried to Eden’s room. He wasn’t sure how much time he had. The officials in the dining hall had looked serious, and he knew that they were suspicious of foul play.

Xander looked down the hallway on the second floor, but most of the girls were probably out by the track. He should be safe.

He sped down the hall to Eden’s room and pushed the key into the lock. It wiggled but didn’t turn.

“Come on,” he muttered, looking over his shoulder again. He took the key out and shoved it in again. It still wouldn’t turn. “What’s the problem?” he asked himself.

Oh, it was the key to his room. He exchanged that key for the one to Eden’s room. They looked identical, but he didn’t have time for silly mistakes.

Once inside, Xander looked around the room until he saw the jacket she had been wearing at breakfast that morning. He tiptoed over to it and examined the sleeves and pockets. There was telltale white powder on one of the sleeves for sure, and as he leaned over to sniff the pocket, he thought he inhaled something. He sneezed twice as he picked up the jacket by the neck.

He had to clear away the evidence, but it wasn’t like he could just wash it in the bathroom. If the girls’ hall was set up like his own, then there would be a bathroom every few rooms. Someone could be in there, and if his sneaking into a girl’s room wasn’t suspicious, sneaking into the girls’ bathroom would be.

Xander looped the jacket over his arm and casually strode out of Eden’s room and to the stairway. A girl was just entering the second floor, and she gave him a strange look before brushing past him.

Once on the stairs, Xander was in safe territory. He had to hope that girl wouldn’t think to report him. Luckily, the cameras were only in public areas where they were allowed to congregate.

He made it to the third floor.

Down the hall and to the bathroom.

Once in the bathroom, Xander stepped into one of the empty shower stalls and turned the water on. It came cascading down in a warm flow, and Xander stood to the side as it ran into the drain, the tips of his shoes getting splashed.

Finding the offending parts of the jacket, Xander thoroughly washed them of the powder, turning the pockets inside out. The plastic bag with remnants of the white powder was still in the pocket too.

Xander ran his fingers through it until it was thoroughly cleaned. Still, he was worried that it might attract attention if they went through the trash. Would any of their sensors be able to detect whatever the drug was that used to be in the bag?

Xander shoved his sleeves up with his wet hands and stuck a couple of his fingers in the drain. He pulled and pulled, but it wouldn’t come up. He picked at the screws, but they were doing their job.
